Texas Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary
The Flower Gardens Banks is most deverse dive site of 19 species of coral and as the seasons change,
the marine life migrates to this submarine islands. Durning the winter peaking in Feburary the Great Hammerhead
Shark congregates for breading. Durning the summer around July the 25 to 65 ft Whale Sharks appear. Durning the fall
the 14 ft wing span Manta Rays arrive and add to any divers advernture to visit the abundance of reef fish,
brain coral shaped like giant mushrooms which I have only seen like this in a marine park on the big island of Hawaii.
The East Bank has 400 acres of coral reef and the West Bank has 100 acres. The National Marine Sancturay has 25 nautical
miles set aside as a natural resource.
Whale sharks enjoy playing in divers bubbles. As seen from the boat, they stay close to the surface
feeding on the zooplankton that floats with the currents. There are schools of fish that accompany this
large fish, such as Cobia (common name Ling), Pilot fish, Remoras and many small one to two inch fish.
